The Douglas Fir tree, (Pseudotsuga menziesii), is a majestic evergreen conifer found in the western regions of North America. These remarkable trees captivate the eye, soaring to heights surpassing 300 feet! In the Coeur d'Alene area, they can grow to around 160 feet, a feature prominently displayed by the trees on our property.
Their distinct flat needles, measuring 1 to 1.5 inches long, create a lush backdrop for our Nature Experience. Adorned with pendulous cones that can grow 3 to 4 inches in length, the Douglas Fir stands as a natural marvel, not just for its beauty but also for its practical significance in the timber industry, accounting for 1/4 of the total lumber production in the United States.
"Douglas" takes its name from Scottish botanist David Douglas. In the 19th century, Douglas extensively explored North America, introducing numerous native plant species from Europe thus earning the honor of having this majestic evergreen conifer named after him.
